Bass Guitars
My first bass could simply be put as a hunk of junk. I think you could have used it as a cricket bat. The action was so high that I struggled to play it, and it sounded like you were making noises through a wet paper bag. Things have changed a bit now, and with my current collection of basses, I hope I never have to play on something like I started with again. Bass has always been a passion of mine. I started learning bass soon after the guitar. Even though learning bass is not hugely different from the guitar in several aspects, it is played very differently and the thought process is entirely different. Here are a few of the basses I have collected over the years.
Dingwall Afterburner IIWohoo, this could be the holy grail of bass guitars. I'm pretty lost for words on this one. 10/10, or should I say 11/10 (spinal tap reference). Everything is perfect. How stunning is the finish, the tone is incredible, it plays like a dream and does everything except make me breakfast, well almost. The preamp is a FD3 Glockenlang. The body is made from Walnut with a quilted maple top and the neck is made from Wenge.

Dingwall Super J 4

On a trip to Sydney with my wife I found this bass for sale. I originally played a Dingwall in Florida many years before, and the fanned fret system baffled me. I remember the shop attendant came over to me after I had been struggling on it and told me to just stop watching my hand and just play. After this I found the frets just worked. I now love the idea and it fits so comfortably with my hands.

Warwick Streamer Stage 1
This was one of my first serious bass guitars. It is simply a stunning instrument. The attention to detail is spot on with the German made Warwick bass guitars, and this being a high spec instrument meets all my expectations. First of all, the string spacing is extra wide, giving a sense of speed when playing slap bass. The neck through help the sustain as the notes just ring out. The 18 volt preamp and the Bass-Line pickup are so versatile, you can pretty well pull any tone from this instrument.

Musicman Stringray 5I must say, I love Musicman. I bought this bass second hand in September 2008. It sounds so cool. If your into slap bass then this will take you where you want to go. I have always enjoyed the grooves that Michael Balzary, know better as Flea, comes out with, and this is his bass of choice.

Human BassX FretlessFretless bass guitars have an amazing tone. They provide the ability to freely move between notes and create sounds that are impossible on a fretted base. Human basses are built in Germany and are a small boutique builder with a high reputation for quality. This base has a Glockenlang Preamp with a 3 band EQ and an Active / Passive switching. This originally was a fretted base, so the fretboard was filled where the frets once were. I actually appreciate the lines, they make keeping pitch so much easier.

Line 6 VariaxThis bass is built in the same line of technology as the Variax series of guitars. This bass features many great models of historical bass sounds.
